Living in Louisiana means you’ll encounter a few cultural speed bumps that you might not encounter anywhere else. Some of these things are very near and dear to all Louisianans, and we will fiercely defend them. Here are some of the most controversial hills that every Louisianan is ready to die on.
1. Everything is a “Coke”
In other parts of the country, it’s pop or soda… but here, it’s all Coke.
“Can I have a coke ?”
“Sure, what kind?”
2. We measure distance in time rather than miles
And chances are there’s some sort of unique mile marker in the form of an old shed, a weird tree, or some other unusual landmark to look out for.
“Walk down the road about 15 minutes and take the second left after the bass-shaped postbox.”
3. Speaking of directions, it’s not uncommon for Louisianans to use water as a navigation tool.
This is especially true in the Greater New Orleans area.
“On the way to the lake”
“Go to the River”
4. Crawfish season is the best season
It obviously trumps hurricane season, and sno-ball season is right behind it, but what really pushed crawfish season to the top spot is that it overlaps with royal cake season.
5. Speaking of king cakes, everyone has both a favorite king cake vendor and also a king cake knife.
Everyone has a royal cake knife that stays in the box until said royal cake is eaten. At this point, it will be washed off and then wait for a fresh king cake to arrive on the counter.
6. Po’boys are better than subs, grinders or hoagies
Dressed up, of course. With a pile of towels.
7. The first cold snap means it’s gumbo weather.
And kitchens across the Pelican State are starting their roux. The biggest difference here (other than seafood or chicken and sausage) is do you put potato salad in yours? Or are you the rice team?
8. Football is life
This is true no matter if it’s high school, college, or the pros. Who is that ! (Also, beat ‘bama.)
9. The marching
band is just as important as the playing team
And the drum majors take their role very seriously.
10. Tony takes care of everything
Sprinkle it on your eggs in the morning, your Bloody Mary at lunch and on your okra at night. This spice blend makes everything better.
