Big Red Machine and Taylor Swift share video for new song “Renegade”: Watch

Big Red Machine, the duo of Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon, shared one of Taylor Swift’s two songs with How long do you think it will last? “Renegade” was recorded in Los Angeles the same week Swift and Dessner won the Grammy for Album of the Year. It features contributions by Bryce Dessner and Jason Treuting and is accompanied by a video directed by Michael Brown. Watch it below and find Aaron Dessner’s statement on the new song.

While we were doing folklore and always Last year, Taylor and I sometimes talked about experimenting and writing songs together someday for Big Red Machine. Make music with your friends just to make it – that’s how Big Red Machine started and grew – and that’s also how “Renegade” was born. This song was something we wrote after we finished always and it occurred to us that it was a BRM song. Taylor’s words hit me so hard when I heard her first voice memo and still do, every time. Justin lifted the song higher to the skies, and my brother [Bryce Dessner]Strings by and drummer Jason Treuting add a lot. The feeling and the sound of this song is at the heart of How long do you think it will last? I am so grateful to Taylor for continuing to share his amazing talent with me and that we always find excuses to make music together.

In a new interview with Zane Lowe about the song, Dessner explained his reaction to the song. “Me, emotionally, I was really struck by the first time I heard her just the way she talks about how anxiety and fear prevent loving someone or create incapacity for someone. ‘one to love,’ he said. “And I think it’s incredibly accessible, but it expresses itself in the context of this pretty experimental world of sound. The way it formed as a song really sums up, I think, the whole Big Red Machine record. He noted that his other song on the album, “Birch,” features a duet between Swift and Vernon.

Other guests on the new album include Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, Sharon Van Etten and, on the lead song “Latter Days”, Anaïs Mitchell. The new song comes a day after “The Ghost of Cincinnati”. Big Red Machine’s self-titled debut album was released in 2018.
