Huawei’s Peng Song: CAF model essential to strengthen network competitiveness and drive growth


The 7th Ultra-Broadband Forum (UBBF 2021) opened today in Dubai. At the event, Peng Song, president of Global Carrier Marketing & Solution Sales at Huawei, delivered a speech titled “Extend Connectivity, Drive Growth”. He defined and developed Huawei’s CAF (Coverage Architecture Fusion) model. Peng pointed out that “there are huge opportunities for connectivity. It is essential for operators to strengthen the competitiveness of the network on the basis of the CAF model.

Peng Song giving the opening speech The past year has been full of challenges and opportunities. Connectivity demands are undergoing dramatic changes for homes and businesses. The houses have become centers of education, work and commerce. Businesses no longer just focus on bandwidth for connectivity. Business connectivity has evolved from communication technology (CT) to operational technology (OT). The expansion of connectivity and convergence with the cloud are becoming the main topics related to connectivity. Today, countries around the world are accelerating digitization and the value of connectivity has been redefined. How can operators help accelerate the digitization of industries, maximize the value of connectivity and achieve new growth?

According to Peng, the CAF model is the key ?? “C” stands for cover, “F” for fusion and “A” for architecture.
Coverage: Currently exploring how we can extend connectivity to homes and businesses to meet new demands and achieve business value. Connectivity demands are changing in both homes and businesses. Once wider coverage becomes available, operators need to extend connectivity to every room, device, and production system in businesses. This will increase the number of connections, increase user loyalty, and ultimately create more business opportunities.

In the home scenarios, Peng suggested two ways to extend connectivity to homes. One is to use Huawei’s full-service fiber optic network planning and industry-leading AirPON and Digital Quick ODN solutions to accelerate fiber coverage and extend fiber to homes. The other is from FTTH (Fiber to the Home) to FTTR (Fiber to the Room), further extending fiber to rooms for home networking. It will bring an experience beyond our imagination. While increasing user loyalty, it above all makes it possible to gain a foothold in the digital home, allowing the development of intelligent services.

In business scenarios, Peng stressed that leased lines must provide differentiated offerings to remain competitive. Most importantly, connectivity needs to be extended inside businesses, from CT to OT. In this way, many problems encountered by enterprises can be solved, such as remote control of API in steel enterprises. This will result in improved production efficiency and user experience.

Fusion: Explores in the future how connectivity can converge with the cloud and enable digitalization. Digitization is the greatest opportunity for the ICT industry. It is no longer a concept, but a reality. Without a doubt, the cloud is at the heart of digitization, but connectivity also plays a key role. According to Peng, the “Merger” is important because connectivity must be cloud-centric and help businesses migrate to the cloud. Connectivity and the cloud must be converged. Operators can play a big role in this process.

In his speech, Peng mentioned two phases of the merger. In the first phase, connectivity should be cloud-centric. Three key words are involved in this phase: “fast” refers to the deployment of the intelligent cloud terminal on the enterprise side to gain rapid access to the cloud; “Multi-cloud interconnect” is to allow SRv6 in backbone networks to implement multi-cloud access through a single connection; “Deterministic” means providing network slicing capabilities to remain deterministic.

In the second phase, connectivity must converge with the cloud and build an ecosystem. This is the hardest part, but also the most valuable part. It requires atomization and opening up of network capacity to implement network selection cloud and cloud planning network.

Architecture: Explores the characteristics of network architecture required to achieve present and future business success. Peng pointed out that to facilitate the evolution of the network, the spine-leaf mode is necessary to make the network architecture more flexible. And technologies like PON and OXC are needed to make network services greener. An autonomous driving network must be introduced to optimize OPEX in terms of O&M. Huawei’s continued efforts in exploring new technologies ?? such as OXC, SRv6 and DNA ?? strengthened the basis of the architecture.

Peng ended his opening speech by quoting this Arabic proverb: “Actions are fruits, while words are only leaves. Despite the difficult environment we face, Huawei continues to focus on innovation in connectivity technologies. We will continue to play our role and support our customers to achieve business success both now and in the future. ”
