INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Madison Keys, founding champion of the nonprofit Kindness Wins, announced Wednesday that she has presented a “Medal of Kindness” to Larry Salas, for his grassroots efforts in the Coachella Valley and with the Indian Wells tournament for the past 10 years.
“I was really happy to be able to recognize someone with a kindness medal who played an important role in the tournament and introduced young people to opportunities in sport and academia here locally, for a long time,” said keys. “There are so many people behind the scenes working so hard to make this tournament one of the best in the world and Larry is definitely one of them, so I’m thrilled to honor him for all his hard work. hard at this event and in this community.
Salas was instrumental in organizing the BNP Paribas Open Scholarship Awards program, awarding four scholarships to Coachella Valley High School students. He has helped recruit ball players for the prestigious Indian Wells tennis tournament for the past decade. Salas has also coached boys’ varsity tennis at Coachella Valley High School since 1987 and served as a guidance counselor there for 20 years.
“Larry Salas is an exceptional person, teacher, mentor and family man who dedicates all of his time and effort to helping people,” said Assistant Tournament Director Peggy Michel. “He’s a model citizen for the entire Coachella Valley. Larry works tirelessly to help young students achieve their educational and athletic goals in life. I am very honored to have Larry in my life.
Kindness Wins, which was launched in early 2020, encourages and spreads kindness to others around the world, and the Kindness Medal is awarded to people whose personal efforts have contributed to this concept. Today’s medal is part of a series of acts, large and small, that are regularly recognized by champions Madison Keys, Mikaela Shiffrin and Oksana Masters, for the impact individuals and organizations have on the world, big or small.
