Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine levels up in Jiu-Jitsu and gets a brown belt

Dave Mustaine has been promoted. That is to say in jiu-jitsu. The Megadeth frontman has been actively involved in Brazilian-style martial arts for a few years now, working his way up the ranks of colored belts awarded to practitioners once they reach certain levels of accomplishment.

On Friday night (October 7), Mustaine was awarded the sport’s prestigious brown belt, the highest level just below the ultimate black belt. Brown belt typically takes five years from beginner level to achieve and is a very competitive level to rank up to, even more impressive for the 61-year-old musician who maintains a regular touring schedule and was battling cancer not long ago. not so long ago.

As strong wire previously reported, Mustaine last earned his purple belt in early 2021, relatively soon after announcing he was cancer-free.

The Megadeth frontman trains regularly at the Gracie Barra Spring Hill BJJ & Self-Defense Center, just outside his home in Nashville, Tennessee. The owner of the practice, Reggie Almeida (black belt in third degree jiu-jitsu and a respected teacher in the martial art) was the one who promoted Mustaine and shared the news with some photos and a video of the belt award ceremony on social media. .

“Congratulations @davemustaine. We all know how hard it is to stay focused and achieve our goals. But with small, steady paces, we’ll get there! One step closer!” writes Almedia.

Mustaine also holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and Ukidokan Karate, so he seems to be on his way to maintaining that level of discipline and craftsmanship in jiu-jitsu as well.

And he’s not the only rocker to do so. Tool/Puscifer/A Perfect Circle leader Maynard James Keenan is also an astute jiu-jitsu practitioner, receiving his own brown belt in late 2021. We just have to see Mustaine and Keenan in the ultimate match.
