Imphal, Aug 7 (UNI) The government of Manipur has banned mobile internet services for five days from Sunday to stop the spread of rumors and fake news.

H. Gyan Prakash, Special Secretary (Interior), said in an order issued on Saturday that the Manipur Chief Police Officer informed of the violence in the state which could become unstable if the situation is left unchecked.

The All Tribal Student Manipur Union (ATSUM) has imposed an economic blockade in the state and a series of violent incidents including the burning of three vehicles and attack on offices took place on Saturday. The ATSUM demanded the introduction of the Autonomous District Council Bill in the Manipur Assembly and two bills were introduced and one bill was passed. Police also arrested five ATSUM members for imposing a blockade.

Prakash said, “The crime has created a tense community situation and an unstable law and order situation in the state. Some anti-social elements make extensive use of social media for the transmission of hateful images, hate speech and video messages inciting public passions. The media has also become a handy tool for gossip peddlers and is used to incite the general public, which could have serious implications for the law and order situation in the state. »

He added: “there is an imminent danger of loss of life and/or damage to public/private property, and widespread disruption of public peace and community harmony, due to incendiary material and false rumors. , which are/could be transmitted/disseminated to the public via social media/messaging services on mobile services, SMS services and dongle services. »

To thwart the design and activities of anti-national and anti-social elements and to maintain community peace and harmony and to prevent any loss of life or danger to public/private property, it has become necessary to take adequate measures to maintain law and order in the public interest, by stopping the spread of misinformation and false rumours, through various social media platforms such as Whatsapp, Facebook, etc. over cellphone and texting, to facilitate and/or mobilize crowds of agitators and protesters, which may result in loss of life and/or damage to public/private property by engaging in arson/ vandalism and other types of violent activity, he added.

For the maintenance of public order, the government has ordered the suspension/limitation of mobile data services in Manipur.
