Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians looking to install air quality monitors – Red Bluff Daily News

CORNING – The Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians are seeking to install air quality monitors in Tehama County.

The monitors would provide real-time air quality data that could be used to inform community members of the presence of harmful airborne particles, including those from smoke from forest fires. . The monitors would be installed at the tribe’s medical clinics in Corning and Red Bluff and at the Tribal Community Center just south of Corning.

To help pay for this, the tribe is considering applying to a community air grants program. The tribe’s director of public works, Tad Williams, said the tribe had previously tried to apply for the grant, but was unsuccessful in part because the monitors had not been installed in more areas. populated.

There would be no cost to Corning or the county for this project.

“The primary cost will be for the tribe for the electricity to keep running the monitors and maintenance,” Williams said.

Williams appeared before Corning City Council on Tuesday to ask for the city’s support for the project and the grant application.

Mayor Robert Snow said air quality, unfortunately, is something the community needs to be concerned about these days.

“I think it’s a good thing the tribe is trying to do this,” Snow said. “This is just another tool for people to monitor their own health and safety. “

City Councilor Karen Burnett said it would be interesting to have real-time air quality data.

The council voted unanimously to send a letter of support for the tribe’s efforts.

After receiving support for the project, Williams said it was good to see the tribe and the city working together on different projects.

“There are tribal members who live here in Corning and there are tribal members all over the area,” Williams said. “So it helps everyone, not just the tribe members, but everyone to be able to see how good they are and determine for themselves whether they want to go out or keep their windows closed. “
