Radiologists are able to differentiate COVID-19 from other look-alikes on chest CT scan


“The authors of this study firmly believe that due to the enormous research activity as well as educational activities focused on the diagnosis of COVID-19, a noticeable increase in knowledge has been achieved over the past year, regardless of level of education. ‘experience in radiology,’ Athanasios Giannakis, of the diagnostic and interventional radiology department at Heidelberg University Hospital, among other affiliations, and co-authors wrote on October 19.

The retrospective study included 90 patients who received a positive RT-PCR test for COVID-19 as well as 294 others with atypical non-COVID pneumonia. Five radiologists (blinded for test results) evaluated the scans and categorized them while recording specific CT features among the two groups of patients. Rads differentiated between the two clinical problems with an overall accuracy of 88%, a sensitivity of 79%, and a specificity of 90%. Band-like subpleural opacities, vascular enlargement, and subpleural curvilinear lines were the variables associated with the most increased risk for COVID pneumonia. Meanwhile, thickening of the bronchial wall and centrilobular nodules were linked to a decreased risk.
