Sam Guy of Terry Sanford and Scott Ellis of South View receive special NCHSAA awards


Two high school baseball coaches in Fayetteville received special awards from the NC High School Athletic Association on Tuesday.

Sam Guy of Terry Sanford and Scott Ellis of South View were honored by the association at virtual regional meetings for responding to a call for help in June.

The two coaches, who represent Region 4 and have coached baseball for over 20 years in Cumberland County, made their baseball fields available for the NCHSAA State Championships in June when JP Riddle Stadium in Fayetteville was deemed unplayable due to flooding,


Guy, who just finished his 12th year with the Bulldogs and has more than 300 career victories, has just completed a year in which he led the his eighth conference title in nine seasons.

In the NCHSAA statement, the association said Guy had “been instrumental in helping NCHSAA staff complete the 2021 NCHSAA State Baseball Championships in June, returning from a family vacation to set the stage for Terry Sanford for Sunday’s makeup matches in State 3A. Championship Series.


Ellis, six-time Coach of the Year with the Tigers, has been a baseball coach for 24 years and over. Like Guy, Ellis opened the South View facility on short notice to help complete a series of state championships.
